Three Dale Brothers came from England
to Saint John. One of the brothers, James, who was married to Jane Chin,
came to what was later known as the Gilbert Cameron property in Plesant
Villa, Queens County. They had five children born while they lived there,
the youngest being J. Thomas, born in 1867. When he was 3 years old, his
father bought a farm, known as the Oliver farm in Summer Hill. These Olivers
had a connection with the Saint John ship- building industry. The farm
was left to J. Thomas when his parents died and remained in the Dale name
until 1947, when it was sold to lumberman, Fred Cameron. He later sold
it to Theodore Brown, who lived there until the military take-over in 1953.
James Dale and his wife are buried in the Headline Kirk Cemetery.
The Dale place was the last property on the Gagetown
Road that was in the Parish of Gagetown. Dales voted on election day in
Gagetown, while the Scotts, who lived across the road voted in Hampstead.
Thomas Dale married Annie Neales Hawkshaw in March
of 1892. They had 4 children. Fred married Betrice McGowan from Lawfield.
Fred was a carpenter and died in 1944. They had 2 children, Harold and
Audrey. Harold died at age 53. Fred and his wife are buried in the Anglican
Church Cemetery in Summer Hill.
Jennie married James McKinney and they operated
the McKinney's General Store at Queenstown, where Jennie tended the store
while James worked as a carpenter. They had 3 children, Harold, Kenneth
and Douglas.
Edith married Albert Reid of Summer Hill where
they farmed until 1953 and then moved to Morna, outside of Saint John.
They died there and are buried in Ocean View Cemetery. They had 3 children,
Annie, Robert and Alma.
Eldon married Muriel Livingston of Hibernia. They
had 4 children, Kenneth, Lloyd, Vivian and Glendon. In 1947 they moved
to Queenstown and built a house there. Eldon worked at the Hampstead Co-Operative
until the military take-over, worked a short time in the Base, and then
returned to woods work with Kenneth. After a period of failing health,
he died in 1993 and is buried in Central Hampstead Cemetery.
Thomas Dale and his wife brought up a grandson,
Reggie, who married Doris Palmer of Central Hampstead. They had 2 children,
Alfred and Dianne. Alfred was killed in an automobile accident in 1974
at age of 21.
After Thomas' wife died in 1935, he lived with
Eldon and Muriel until his death in 1956. Thomas and his wife are buried
in the Summer Hill Anglican Cemetery.
The Summer Hill Anglican Church was donated and
moved to Chipman after the Army Camp took over. A beautiful country church,
Fred Dale and George Sutton were the chief carpenters in its construction.
