The Petty (Pettie) Family of Clones

John Petty and Susanna Armstrong were united in marriage on the 20th of October at the parsonage of Reverend Mr.Golding in an unnamed village in Ireland. They left Ireland in 1850 aboard the ship "SARAH' accompanied by their sons, Thomas and John, and they arrived in Saint John in a period between June and August of the same year.

John Petty received a grant of land from the Crown for 100 acres in Clones, Parish of Petersville,  Queens County on April 11th 1854 (Grant #6133).  This land plus other acreage acquired in later years remained in the Petty family until sold to the federal government for a military base in September 1953.
John and Susanna had seven children listed below:

John, Susanna and three of their children are buried in a lot at the Church of England cemetery at Headline, Queens County,  New Brunswick. John died March 11th 1903 at the age of 87 years and his wife Susanna died May 29th, 1920 at the age  of  96 years.  Their sons John and Thomas are buried close by.

Thomas and Mary Jane (Currie)'s children were John Sammy, Susanna, Thomas, Jennie, George, Sarah, Mary and Charlotte.  They also had twins who were stillborn and were buried on the farm on a knoll near their barn by a stone fence.

On January 7th, 1879 in Saint John New Brunswick, the Reverend G. M. Armstrong, Rector of the Parish of St. Marks united in marriage John Petty of Petersville, Queens County and Elizabeth Barnett, second daughter of John Barnett, of the same place.  They resided on the family farm in South Clones until their deaths.  Elizabeth was born May 10, 1858 and died March 6, 1951. The 11 children of John and Elizabeth (Barnett) Petty:

  1. Elizabeth Ann (19 Nov 1879 - 27 Mar 1959) m. Nov 01, 1905, Benjamin McCracken Elizabeth and Benjamin McCracken had two children: Elizabeth,  Howard.
  2. Thomas Arthur ( 17 Jul 1882 - 26 Oct 1979) m. 15 Jan 1913, Minnie Blanch Cooper Thomas and Minnie Cooper had seven children: Hazel, Muriel, Myrtle, Gordon, John, Thomas, Helen
  3. Margaret Ellen (10 Jul 1885 - 26 Apr 1971) m. May 11, 1910, William McLaughlin Margaret Ellen (Ella) and William McLaughlin had three children: Harold, John, Maxine
  4. George Samuel M. (05 Jun 1888 - 31 Aug 1994) m. 01 Dec 1920, Margaret Susan Woods. George and Margaret (Woods) Petty had nine children  See below.

  6. Mary Myrtle (12 Sep 1892 - 17 Dec 1893)
  7. Charles Edward (14 Jul 1894 - 17 Mar 1969) m. 20 Oct 1926 Florence Parsons Charles and Florence Parsons had two children: Robert, Ralph.
  8. Florence Mabel (29 Oct 1896 - 07 Nov 1950) m. 10 Sep 1919, Charles Cooper Florence and Charles Cooper had four children: Eldon, John, Kenneth, Margaret.

  10. William Ellsworth (08 Jun 1901 - 15 Jun 1977) m. 22 July 1940, Ada Procter. Ellsworth and Ada Proctor had no children.
  11. John Delbert (23 Apr 1903 - 11 Jul 1905)


George and Margaret (Woods) Petty had nine children:
