and later taught in Queens County - perhaps in the Petersville area. In

WHALEN, Josephine C. (1915-1939), was the
daughter of George T. Whalen and Catherine R. Broughill of Smith Creek,
Kings County, New Brunswick. Josephine graduated from the Provincial Normal
School in 1933. She taught in Loisville in 1935 and perhaps in other schools
in Queens County.
In the summer of 1935, the residents of Loisville
got permission from the Department of Education to build a school in their
community. It was their intention to have the building ready for opening
in September. Shortly after construction got underway, however, a forest
fire broke out in the area. Several men who were working on the school
were called away to fight it. This of course delayed the project. Nonetheless,
by September the inside of the structure was more or less finished as promised
and the school opened on time. As for the outside of the building that
was a different matter. For several months, it resembled a tar-paper shack
because it had no shingles yet on it. In addition, the grounds surrounding
the building were very muddy as the entire area had not been seeded. With
all that mud around, you can just imagine how difficult it must have been
to keep the classroom area clean. So in some repects to this young teacher,
the scene must have reminded her of pioneer life in the wilderness. (Submitted
by nephew, James M Whalen, Fredericton)
